Selangor reps stopped from speaking at anti-highway protest

Protesters hold up placards at the anti-Kidex and anti-DASH rally in Petaling Jaya today. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Mukhriz Hazim, January 25, 2015.Tension ran high at a protest against the proposed Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex) and Damansara-Shah Alam Expressway (DASH) in Petaling Jaya today when Selangor state government representatives were not allowed to speak at the event.An argument occurred when the Say No To Kidex (SNTK) protem co-chairman Dr Mohan Mahatheva told off Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua and his group who were about to go on stage to address the 400-over crowd gathered at Dataran Petaling Jaya since 10am.Pua, along with Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo and Subang MP R.Sivarasa, were asked to hold their own forum instead to explain to the residents of Petaling Jaya and Damansara over their "failure" to help stop the projects.In defending their right to speak at the gathering, Pua in a press conference later expressed his regret over what had transpired.“Despite initial agreement to allow us to respond and to allow YB Sivarasa and me to speak, they decided not to let us respond."We regret that as much as there is truth in what they said, there were also half truths and incorrect information," said Pua.He said one of the most commonly exerted "half truth" was the accusation that Pakatan Rakyat elected representatives did absolutely nothing regarding the projects.“Let me also state that at this point of time, there has been no approval given by the state government to Kidex," said Pua.He said the land acquisition caveat, issued during the previous state government under Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim had expired and the request to renew the caveat has been denied.Pua added the state government would not approve the Kidex project if it failed to meet with the conditions set by Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali by February 14.“If the conditions are not met, then there will be no highway," said Pua.He said although he appreciated the anti-highway groups' effort in bringing the issues to the state government's attention, there was also "plenty of salt and pepper" being added to discredit the work of PR reps on the matter.“We support their effort... but there were also half truths and lies," said Pua.His remark has apparently angered some of the residents, who were listening to the press conference and demanded him to point out the "lies". Pua responded to this by saying that the "lies" had already been mentioned.Meanwhile, Sivarasa said the Dash issue was more complicated but efforts are being made to address residents' grouses, including possible realignment of the highway at areas deemed too close to their houses.During the protest, both groups (SNTK and Say No To Dash) expressed their frustration over what they described as the failure of the elected representatives from Pakatan Rakyat, training their guns at Azmin for his "silence" on the issue.

They tell me they do not have money."Do not worry about money, I will find money. If we are not brave, how are we going to bring change? Let's bring (Datuk Seri) Anwar (Ibrahim), Azmin, (Datuk Seri) Najib (Razak) to court."It does not matter if we win or lose. At least we know more," said Zaid.He added that residents must not allow the state government and Putrajaya to take them as fools.“I am from Kelantan but I have stayed in Petaling Jaya for 44 years. This is a stupid crazy project. It was decided by the Cabinet in 2011 without consulting anybody except those who want to make money," Zaid said.He said the Pakatan Rakyat government had reneged on their promise to disallow construction of tolled highways.“Why is Azmin being so difficult? Don’t take us as fools," said Zaid.Kidex signed a concession agreement on November 15, 2013, and was given a year to fulfil conditions required in order to start work. In November last year, it was granted a three-month extension after failing to achieve several requirements.The 26.1-kilometre highway will start from the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) toll above the Sprint highway at the Damansara interchange and end at the Damansara Puchong Highway (LDP) at Bandar Kinrara Section 2.According to the concession company, Kidex could reduce traffic congestion on the LDP by 25% to 30% and on local roads, in areas like Bandar Utama by 10% to 20%.With 12 interchanges, the RM11.5 billion expressway plans to link drivers to Lebuhraya Damansara Puchong and Sprint highways, which residents claimed are already congested during peak hours.DASH will serve motorists from Puncak Perdana, Alam Suria, Denai Alam, Kampung Melayu Subang, Jalan Sungai Buloh, the Rubber Research Institute Malaysia, Kota Damansara, Damansara Perdana and Mutiara Damansara, Prolintas has said. – January 25, 2015

Time for Malaysians to question lack of local council polls, says DAP

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang is surprised that the issue of local government elections is being linked to the possibility of racial riots. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 25, 2015.Fifty years after the suspension of local government polls, DAP today said Malaysians should start asking why it should not be restored in the country.DAP parliamentary leader and MP for Gelang Patah Lim Kit Siang, in thanking the PAS president, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang for starting the public debate on the issue, said this is also the time for Malaysians to move beyond the politics of race to a more inclusive one."It is 50 years down the road and Malaysians are entitled to ask why they should continue to be denied local government election, when it is accepted as a basic democratic right of citizens in countries committed to a democratic way of life," he said.Lim added that he did not agree with Hadi that local government election may lead to another May 13-like race riots.This, he explained is because the politics of inclusion would unite Malaysians instead of the current practice of “divide and rule" politics of exclusion."In fact, this is the first time anyone has claimed that the restoration of local government election could result in another May 13 race riots," the Gelang Patah MP said at the DAP kopitiam dialogue in Batu Pahat, Johor today.Lim, who was first elected MP in 1969, said the causes of the May 13 race riots were still a guarded secret and he had in his first speech in Parliament in February 1971 called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry to conduct a wide-ranging investigation into the causes.He said it was a great fallacy for anyone to assert that the restoration of local government election could result in another May 13 race riots.On March 1 1965, the nation's first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, suspended local council election, giving as justification the threat of Indonesian confrontation.Lim said Tunku, however, gave the undertaking to Parliament that the election would be restored the very moment peace was declared.On Friday, Hadi said DAP's insistence on holding local council elections could cause a deeper racial divide, as well as tension, and that PAS rejected any move that could bring about a repeat of the May 13 riots.Hadi said DAP's push for local government elections was a mistake as it was only advantageous to urban residents, who were mainly non-Malays.His remarks were a result of a war of words between PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali and DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke over the issue of local government elections.Hadi's statement was supported by Local Government and Urban Development Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan and Umno mouthpiece Mingguan Malaysia.Lim said with Hadi opening the way, he would not be surprised if this would be used by reactionary Barisan Nasional leaders as an additional reason for opposing the restoration of local government elections.He said many seemed to have forgotten that a very vibrant local government democracy had existed in the country in the 1950s and the first half of the 1960s.There were 373 local authorities that had well over 3,000 elected local councillors before local government elections were suspended.He said a Royal Commission of Inquiry headed by Datuk Athi Nahappan was established into the workings of local government, which recommended the restoration of the polls.However, he said a law was finally passed in 1976 to abolish local government elections but the real reason was that BN leaders had no confidence of victory in the local council elections.Lim said it was also wrong and misguided for anyone to argue that the restoration of local government elections would be dominated by the Chinese and that the DAP would be the main beneficiaries."This is to ignore the process of Malay urbanisation in the 45 years since the 1969 general election," he added.According to the 2010 census data, the Malay population (45.9 %) in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur outnumber the Chinese population (43.2%).In fact, out of the three city halls, nine city councils and 37 municipal councils in Malaysia, only six – Ipoh, Kuching Selatan, Johor Baru Tengah, Pulau Pinang, Sibu and Subang Jaya – have populations where the Chinese outnumber the Malays."In other words, 88% of these large urban areas have a plurality and in most cases, a majority, of Malay residents. Even in a place like Petaling Jaya, the Malay population (46.2%) outnumbers the Chinese population (39.6%)," Lim said.He said 58 years after Merdeka, Malaysians should move beyond the politics of race to an inclusive politics."The 2008 and 2013 general elections are proof of this politics of inclusion which unite Malaysians and this is one important reason why after 50 years, local government elections should be restored to Malaysia," he added. – January 25, 2015.

Phua disabitkan bersalah di M'sia, kata sumber

Lelaki yang dikatakan membantu Putrajaya dalam projek melibatkan keselamatan negara dikatakan pernah disabitkan kesalahan jenayah di negara ini.

Sumber polis memaklumkan kepada Malaysiakini bahawa 'raja judi' Paul Phua Wei Seng ditahan di Miri, Sarawak pada 2004 semasa perlawanan Piala Euro di Miri.

Seorang sumber yang berada di tempat kejadian ketika Phua didakwa dan disabitkan kesalahan terlibat dalam perjudian haram memberitahu bahawa dia didenda.

Selepas membayarnya, Phua dikatakan meninggalkan negara ini dan kemudian dilarang memasuki Malaysia ketika Piala Dunia 2008

Menurut sumber, Phua, 50, juga dikenali sebagai 'Sabah kia' (budak Sabah) walaupun dia sebenarnya berasal daripada Miri, seperti maklumat dalam kad pengenalannya.

Pua menjadi tumpuan berita selepas ditahan dan didakwa oleh Biro Siasatan Persekutuan (FBI) di Amerika Syarikat atas tuduhan terlibat dengan operasi judi haram besar-besaran di Caesar's Palace, sebuah hotel lima bintang di Last Vegas pada Julai lepas.

Menteri Dalam Negeri Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi kemudian mengeluarkan yang berkata tidak mempunyai hubungan dengan kongsi gelap 14K dan membantu Malaysia dalam urusan keselamatan negara.

Kumpulan yang berpangkalan di Hong Kong itu terlibat dengan jaringan jenayah antarabangsa dan dikatakan samseng kedua terbesar di dunia dengan keanggotaan lebih 25,000 orang.

Menurut laporan polis pada 2004 yang dilihat Malaysiakini, serbuan dilakukan pada serang bookie bola sepak di Jalan Kelab Golf, Miri oleh pasukan polis pada 3.15 pagi, pada 4 Julai tahun sama.

Dalam serbuan itu seramai 22 lelaki ditahan ketika menjalankan perjudian haram untuk pertandingan akhir Euro 2004 yang disiarkan langsung antara Portugal dan Greece, menurut laporan itu lagi.

Phua sekarang dibebaskan dengan jaminan di Nevada, AS bersama anaknya Darren.

Dilaporkan bahawa mereka berdua dibebaskan dengan syarat memakai gelang tangan GPS, yang membolehkan kedudukannya dikesan.
