‘Tidak apa’ attitude main reason towns are dirty – Bernama

Rubbish strewn around by the side of a road. This scenario is played out across the country as many Malaysian just throw their rubbish anywhere they wish to. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, February 8, 2015.A poor sense of cleanliness – or "tidak apa" (don't care) – is the main reason local authorities and the government face an uphill task in keeping towns in the country clean.Solid Waste Corporation (SWC) chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Rahim Mohd Noor said the problem was due to people throwing rubbish everywhere except in the rubbish bins provided. He said a mental transformation was needed quickly to ensure the efforts of various parties succeed in line with the modernisation of the country.  "The local authorities and solid waste concession companies have been cleaning up and managing waste well, so the community must reciprocate by ensuring the cleanliness of a place. "Palembang in Indonesia, for example, may not be as attractive as Malaysian cities but the place is clean. I was there recently and I could not spot any rubbish at public places," Rahim told a news conference on the Clean Town programme, in Alor Setar today. Rahim said the five clean town pilot projects in Langkawi, Muar, Rembau, Pekan and Putrajaya required public cooperation to ensure the success of these projects. He said hopefully, the projects implemented at the end of last year would enable the five areas achieve the clean town status by next year. "The programme in Muar began in September last year and I could see the improved level of cleanliness and can do better towards achieving the clean town status."He said the local authorities needed to act against those throwing rubbish indiscriminately by enforcing their existing regulations as is being done in developed countries. – Bernama, February 8, 2015.
