Sedition case involving Karpal’s nephew to proceed next month


Dalbinder Singh Gill was arrested last year over a Facebook posting that allegedly questioned Bumiputera privileges and the monarchy. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Hasnoor Hussein, January 19, 2015.A nephew of the late Karpal Singh who was investigated for sedition last year said he was expecting his day in court next month.Dalbinder Singh Gill said he was recently notified that his case "would proceed next month"."I had written to the Attorney-General's Chambers to ask for my iPad and iPhone back last month."Last week I got a reply telling me that the items cannot be returned as my case will be proceeding next month," he told The Malaysian Insider in Penang today.Dalbinder's iPad and iPhone were seized by the police on September 30 last year when he was arrested over a Facebook posting that allegedly questioned Bumiputera privileges and the monarchy.He was reportedly investigated under Section 4(1)(C) of the Sedition Act by the police's cyber crime department in Kuala Lumpur. The penalty for publishing or reproducing seditious publications is a maximum fine of RM5,000, three years jail or both.Dalbinder, a 24-year-old law graduate, said he should be getting another letter from the A-G Chambers in a few weeks to tell him to attend court in Kuala Lumpur."I will just face it. I have no choice but to be ready," he said, adding that police investigation into his case had been completed.Dalbinder said he had not appointed a lawyer, but had been consulting a few, including Kebun Bunga state assemblyman Cheah Kah Peng.He said people were not free to think and voice their views critically."You comment a little, you risk facing the Sedition Act."I never expected this, even until now. But what's done is done and there is nothing I can do but keep going," he added.Dalbinder was one of the many people picked up and investigated under the Sedition Act last year.Others were law professor Dr Azmi Sharom, Pakatan Rakyat politicians Teresa Kok, N. Surendran, Tian Chua, Rafizi Ramli, Khalid Samad and R.S.N. Rayer, as well as social activists Hishamuddin Rais and Ali Abdul Jalil. – January 19, 2015.
